Liverpool Gopal Gaudiya Math Book Distribution Report for July & Photographs of us receiving books from ETaV.
& photographs of BV Bhagavat Maharaja doing books with us on the streets of Liverpool.
Dear god brother’s & sister’s, friends, wellwisher’s. It is with great pleasure that we present to the devotees & friends of our sanga our latest book report, latest update, along with some photographs from B.V. Bhagavat Maharaja when he visited us a few month’s back and we did book distribution & Hari Nama. We have also included some photograph’s of us receiving a new shipment of book’s which where donated to us via ETaV [Every town & village].
Every month we do a book table in Liverpool City Centre, if we stay for five or six days in Liverpool then we spend at least 3 of those day’s doing book distribution either straight books where we stop people and have a one to one with them about Krsna Consciousness and get them interested in the books and we also have our book table which is very popular. We have also introduced doing kirtan and distributing prasadam at the book table too.
We where extremely fortunate that this of July was glorious with long-days, which where very warm indeed and the people of Liverpool where as always’s in a happy-go-lucky mood. They never fail to make our day’s of book distribution enjoyable.
Every month we meet new interested people whom unless you actually go out onto the street and do books you would never reach them, but they are out there and when they seen the new sign that Radha Raman had painted then they came right over to enquire and have a look at our book table.
We don’t badger them, we just let them browse at their own leisure and handle the books and look at the subject matter of each one. We only intervene when they seem to be pondering over which book they should take then we strike up a conversation with them and then tell them about each book and how it may benefit them, we always try to tailor the book to the person. That way they are taking a book which is a guarantee that they will read.
One lady approached the table and had a look, she seemed to be taking her time but looked pensive, she kept glancing at me and I knew she wanted to speak with me so I immediately asked her what book she had in her hand, she showed me, but she did not seem to be happy with her choice. So I pushed on further. It materialised after a few minutes she opened up to me and told me that she had just lost a very close relative of her‘s, her mother! I knew immediately what she needed and picked up the book ‘Coming Back by Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada’ Before giving her the book I listened to her about her concerns for her mother, I told her about the Soul and how it passes at the time of death, she was surprised to hear that and liked it very much, especially as it gave her hope that her mother had gone somewhere better. I also related to her my experiences when my own mother & father passed-on, she related to what I told her completely. I so wanted to help this lovely lady she was suffering so much and I knew that this little book could help her so much. I explained the differing chapter’s and what they covered of course by this time the lady’s mood had lifted and she said she felt so much better after talking to me. I had answered a lot of her questions, some her own priest could not even touch upon, she told me. I gave her my contact details should she wish to chat further and that the book ‘Coming Back’ which would help her so much over this difficult period. It was lovely having the time with her to help her. This is what we are here for, to give answer’s to peoples questions then give them an appropriate book that will help them further to look for more Spiritual resolutions instead of mundane material one’s.
We had another nice man approach our table who was studying medicine at Oxford University, he was up in Liverpool for 5 day’s or so and wanted to come to our meetings whilst he was in Liverpool. Radha Raman had a good long conversation with him and we exchanged telephone number’s as he liked what he heard and he loved the books, so much so he went away with four books!
Another devotee came over and joined us he was great, such a treat indeed we all chatted and laughed and he was with us for a good hour or more and wanted to come back with us he liked us so much. He was overwhelmed by the books we had and we actually had some books he had been wanting to get his hands on for some time so needless to say he left our table with a bag full of books and he bought himself some squash drink and was heading to the nearest park to have an afternoon of reading and enjoying his new books, in the warm afternoon sunshine.
We where joined, as we are every month by Julia and Jenny lovely devotees from ISKCON who come and help us out they are an inspiration and Jenny has read practically read all of our Gurudeve’s books, she is so read-up and tuned-in to the philosophy they are lovely indeed and we really enjoy each other’s company and it rubs off, people are attracted to our happy, smiley, faces and our happiness is infectious, people just wander over to see what is going on with us.
After clearing-up after another successful ‘Book-Fest’ as we know and affectionately call it, we headed off for a cooling drink and to get out of the heat that had been blasting us all afternoon, we had not noticed it before as we had been so busy at the table time just flies by! As we where heading to get our drinks. Me being the gobby-scouser struck a joke with some bloke as we where going in the doorway of the shop, we had a laugh and a joke and four hour’s later it turned out he was the brother of a very old friend of mine and Radha Ramans from our day’s in ISKCON we all reminisced about the good-old day’s and how we got to know his sister and her husband. I can remember performing arati to their lovely Gaura Nitai deities in the temple when they visited. All very sweet, he was another person who was so tuned-in to the philosophy and the conversation just flowed like we had known each other for year’s. Radha spoke to him and he liked what he heard, he said it was a breath of fresh air, and that to him it sounded like we where preaching as it was supposed to be done, like in the early day’s of Srila Prabhupada. We told him that is what we are aiming for, that is our mission. We discussed with him our plans for the future of preaching in Liverpool and he wanted to be counted-in and come to our meetings. It culminated in us giving our best wishes and dandavats to his sister. It was getting so late in the evening now, we where tired and needed rest and sustenance, so we said our goodbyes and headed for home. Once more we left all our details exchanged telephone number’s and parted, new friends.
There are so many devotees and interested people hiding in the wings just waiting for that right opportunity to be uncovered so it is so encouraging when we meet them and they express such an appreciation and interest in Krsna Consciousness, after all our city of Liverpool has been blitzed by so many Krsna Conscious books over the year’s. Radha Raman started off the book distribution in Liverpool year’s ago when he was instrumental in setting-up the first temple here in Liverpool and he was the first devotee to go out on the streets of Liverpool and distribute books. Funny how it’s come full-circle and here he is again! Right back where he started!
We had two Seafarer’s come to the table they where Indian and had travelled up from Brasil and quite a few other stops in-between that it made our minds boggle and they where great! So lovely to talk to concerning the philosophy and Krsna Conscious in general. They noticed some caratels on the table and they picked them up and started to play them and sing invocations, Maha-Mantra, Panca-Tattvah, so we had a spontaneous kirtan going on at the book table with us all joining in. People where stopping and watching us, these men where expert kartel player’s and we somehow wished we had a mrdanga with us. It became quite ecstatic and enjoyable, we did Gurudeve and the Parampara proud!! And afterwards we received applause from the watching crowd. This book table is a magnet of bliss that folks just love and are attracted to, where else can you suddenly meet some people and strike-up a kirtan slap-bang in the middle of the City Centre….So impromptu. We where all buzzing after that!
The next day after the book table, Sunday we met the same chap again that we met outside the shop the previous day and we continued our conversation again. It’s great, it really is, we get recognised now and people come over to chat with us and find-out how we are doing which is lovely and encouraging.
But the people of Liverpool are like that anyhow. We now have to carry books on us and business cards with our details on we also have to keep some books in our car, as when we are out and about we do meet people and strike-up conversations and we like to leave them with a book and contact details, so they can further their interest should they wish to.
We have been blessed by finding a suitable venue to hold monthly and weekly meetings right slap-bang in the middle of the City Centre with excellent, first-class facilities, It is incredibly very satvic indeed and it has excellent transport connections. It seems to be snow-balling along so fast, more and more interested people are coming forward and showing an interest to help us, get involved and come to our meetings.
We are now staming-up our new assignment of books ready for this month’s ’Book Fest’ in Liverpool City Centre and we hope you like some of the photographs we have sent you and if any of you want to join us up here in Liverpool then get-in-touch with us, you are assured a very warm friendly scouse welcome.
All for the glory & pleasure of our beloved Gurudeve. Das anu das anu das
