Puri Book Distribution

by Taruni and Yamuna dasis

Today 2 girls from our book distribution seva team – Taruni dasi and Yamuna dasi – went out for an experiment. We wanted to distribute books near the Jagannatha Temple. We thought it would be a great chance to meet very pious people from all over India, who came especially to take darshan of Lord Jagannatha. We cannot go inside due to our fallen condition, so we were doing kirtana just near the main entrance. There was a big crowd there – hundreds of people searching for spiritual experience. We found distributing books there really easy. Yamuna was surprised, “I didn’t have to do anything. The books themselves did everything, books and kirtana, and Srila Gurudeva, and Sri Jagannatha.” While we were singing the maha-mantra, people were crowding around us and asking for books. We were non-stop giving them Ways of Love, Damodarastakas and especially Jagannatha Ratha Yatras. This constant flow was interrupted time to time only by dwarfish South Indian cows who were suddenly knocking their cute muzzles on our hands asking for some caresses.

I saw nearby one honorable looking Indian family and approached them with books. I was surprised to know that they came from New York. I asked the young gentleman, why didn’t he go inside the temple to see Lord Jagannatha. “My mum went for darshan,” he said, “but I didn’t go, because I feel bad they don’t allow foreigners to come inside. I think the Lord is for everybody, not only for Indians”. He bought the Jagannatha Ratha Yatra book.

Yamuna met very sweet children, with such a very natural and playful mood – she was just charmed by them.

In about two hours all our bags became empty and we managed to come back to Srila Gurudeva’s temple in time for evening prasadam. Now we are waiting for the rest of the girls who should soon come from the book fair, looking forward to hear their news. We’ll write more tomorrow.

What a wonderful and inspiring report! This is the kind of message we need to becoe inspired for preaching or to keep on being inspired. I could almost picture you girls at the Simhadvara, under the smiling, blessing look of Patata-pavana Jagannath! Keep up with this great mood! All glories to your service, so pleasing to all our holy masters!

    Haribol little sisters
Reading about your transcendental exploits reminds me of a very happy year doing book distribution around India back in the 80′s. We made a metal book-table-trolley with a sun shade & lots of storage below for extra books. It was so easy to park ourselves somewhere and just spend the day having sweet exchanges with the pious local people. If things got quiet, we pushed the trolley to a busier part of town. This worked well in every city we visited. Hearing about your preaching reminds me how much I miss those days.

Your experience is very nicely presented in this report. It enriches the efforts of promoting the mission of Sacinandan Mahaprabhu here in a land of secrecy.
Just today we are sending Jag Mohan prabhu with translator Uttam prabhu across the border to give 1 month harikatha. Sripad Vaisnava Maharaj with Yamuna didi as translator, is also traveling there now in a different part of the Red continent. The mood of Srila Gurudev’s preachers is always to inspire the jivas although the environment in China is extremely opposite from Jagganath Puri.

I’ve always thought of distribution of books in India … outside of Delhi, but have never seen how it would be anywhere else … Like in Puri it must be ecstacy; it seems you are really tasting the sweet nectar of book distribution, you lucky ones; Jay Gurudeva & Jay Jagannath !

Ps. Christmas coming …and Christmas Marathon as Prabhupada called it; but in Jagannath’s Dhama there’s nothing else in sight than Lord Jagannath … even lord Jesus came for his darshan in Puri ! Srila Gurudeva confirms this in one of his books.

So satisfying and delightful to hear all these things. Thankyou so much for doing this, for distributing the books for Srila Gurudeva and for reporting about it.

In 2004 I spent a month in Puri and almost every night passed out fliers. This would be a fantastic place to have a permanent book distribution team!
