Gaudiya Vaishnava reflections

This year our Srila Gurudeva’s very own Holland Sanga (www.bhakti-holland.com) was truly blessed to have the association of Sripad BV Vana Maharaja and celebrate the Divine Advent of Sri Krishna known as Shri Krishna Janmashtami. The festivities were held in a rented community center in Rotterdam (Radha Dhama) in the south of Holland and was attended by 150 – 200 devotees and guests. Some had traveled from as far as Germany and UK to attend the festival.
The programme that evening included Bharat Natyam, several drama plays by our sanga’s children, Indian devotional and classical music performances and a pravachan (sacred narration) about the birth of Krishna into this world in Vrajabhumi, Vrindavan dhama.
Just before midnight—the exact time of Krishna’s appearance—the deity form of the Lord was bathed with the five auspicious substances including ghee, honey, milk and yoghurt while loud kirtan was lead by Sripad Vana Maharaja. For those who had been observing a full fast—not even taking a sip of water—the smells of the wonderful prasadam offerings was starting to fill the atmosphere. Soon all of the guests and devotees were served a sumptuous Ekadasi (non-grain) feast to fill their bellies to the brim with the foodstuffs that had now been sanctified after they were tasted by the Lord and His associates.
The Holland devotees are greatly thankful to Srila Gurudeva for making all of this happen and for sending us his dear representative to help us in observing this wonderful day according to the prescribed customs and practices.
